Where Do Beignets Come From?

Beignet is the French word for fried dough. In Louisiana, they are called “French doughnuts.” Beignets are traditionally served during Mardi Gras in New Orleans and in Louisiana Cajun culture. They’re also associated with the cuisine of Acadian people. Beignets are an old recipe. They’re believed to have originated with the Spanish, who brought sugarcane as a crop into Louisiana in the 1600s. The cane was used to make syrup and beignets were made from that syrup. Today in New Orleans, vegan apple beignet recipes are made by adding apples to vegan yeast dough and then frying them.

Beignets in Dutch Culture

In Dutch culture, beignets are a doughnut-shaped cake made with yeast. They’re usually filled with whipped cream and powdered sugar. They are called “suikerspootjes” which translates to sugarhairs. They’re typically eaten with coffee or tea.

Deciding if You Want Apple or Vegan Yeast Dough

Preheat a skillet or deep fryer to 350 degrees F. Then you will dust a surface with flour and roll one dough ball at a time until it forms a long rope about 3/8-inch thick, then cut into 1-inch pieces (or just shape them into 2″ balls). Let excess flour fall off by shaking about 10 times over the surface before

What is the Difference Between a Doughnut and a Beignet?

A doughnut is typically covered in a sweet, heavy sugar-based glaze or icing. The cut edges are often finished with small points for decorating purposes. On the other hand, a vegan beignet is a fruit-filled vegan fried dough pastry whereas a vegan diabetic doughnut is just vegan yeast bread without the sugary coating.

What is the Best Way To Store Vegan Apple Beignets?

Vegan apple beignets are best stored in the fridge in a sealed container at room temperature for about two days. Best part? You can serve this warmed up or cold and they are just as good!

Are these Vegan and Gluten-Free?

For this recipe, our vegan apple beignets are vegan and kosher, but not gluten-free. You can substitute the flour for GF Flour, White Rice Flour or Almond Flour.

Servings 12 -15 beignets

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup carbonated water
  • ¼ cup sugar

  • Frying oil I used canola oil, but you can also use vegetable or sunflower oil

  • 3. Add your oil to a deep pot with a thermometer and heat until it reaches a temperature of 350 degrees.
  • 4. Dip each of the apple slices through the batter and let the excess fall off the apple slice.
  • 5. Slowly lower the battered apples into the oil, frying for 3-5 minutes until they are golden brown.
  • 6. As they come out of the oil, dip each one in a mixture of cinnamon sugar and place on a drying rack.
  • 7. Allow the beignets to cool slightly and serve warm for a delicious treat!
